The word "salik" means "open" or "clear", referring to the absence of toll booths and toll collectors. ==Basics== The Salik System was inaugurated in July 2007 and is managed by the ''Road Transportation Authority'' in Dubai. It was designed to decrease and regulate urban traffic flow, which has increased substantially in recent years due to the economic boom and the influx of tourists. It operates by an electronic strip attached to the windshield. The revenues collected are used to improve roads and bridges. The test launch of the new program took place with the installation of gates on the Al Garhoud Bridge, the Al Maktoum Bridge and Sheikh Zayed road. Each pass through these gates costs four Dirhams, except for Sheikh Zayed road where the gate allows unlimited passage for one hour.
